Welcome to the Mustang Family!
Dear Parents,
Western New Mexico University values the time and resources that you are dedicating to your child’s education. If this is your son or daughter’s first step out of high school, we’re here to answer any questions you have through the college process, from the beginning stages of picking a school and applying, all the way through choosing a degree path, financing and registering for classes.

Getting Started

Most information you need can be found in the Office of Admissions webpage. If there is one piece of advice we have for you, it is to start on the next steps early. You never know what deadline might be coming up or might have already passed.

Steps to successfully becoming a Mustang:

Step 1 – Apply for admission.

Step 2 – Complete a placement test (Accuplacer). Most new students have to take this prior to scheduling their classes.

Step 3 – Meet with an advisor. An Admission representative will guide you through the registration process and get your classes scheduled for you.

Step 4 – Make payment arrangements so that you can finalize. Prior to making payment, you should consider applying for financial aid resources including FAFSA and scholarships through the University Foundation.

New Student Orientation

If this is your first semester at WNMU, and you are considered a freshman, it is required to attend New Student Orientation. This is your opportunity to get to know campus, see where your classes will take place, and meet new Mustangs.

Getting your books

Purchasing or renting your textbooks on-time is essential to having a successful semester. The University Bookstore is located in the first floor of the Student Memorial Center and is your best resource for textbook purchases or rentals. To learn if your class has a text requirement, you can find your class on this page. Once you find your class (make sure it has the correct CRN number), go to the link in blue titled Textbook Information. That link will give you the details related to the required text.

Paying for college

Tuition and fees vary each school year. Funding your child’s education can be the biggest fear and obstacle for a family. But just a few clicks through the Ways To Save page can help put you at ease. Deadlines are the most important aspect when dealing with financial aid and scholarships, so pay attention to those. Do a quick estimate on how much a college education will cost.

Living on campus

Living on campus is proven to increase the likelihood of graduation and academic success. For students who have taken less than 60 credit hours, living on campus is required. There are several residence hall options. See here for your options as well as meal plan information.

Resources

There are a variety of resources on campus to help your student succeed inside and outside the classroom. They include the Center For Student Success, Miller Library, technology support, an on-campus food pantry, mental health support, and more.
