The Eight Steps to Career Success

Step 1 – Meet with your Career Services and Leadership Development Coordinator to initiate your career action plan.

Step 2 – Assess your interests, values, skills, and abilities.

Step 3- Begin to build your resume and portfolio.

Step 4 – Explore and research majors, careers, and employers.

Step 5 – Develop your self-marketing and job search skills.

Step 6 – Gain experience in a career-related field.

Step 7 – Implement your full-time job or graduate school search.

Step 8 – Keep informed of career management trends.

In addition to the “8-Steps to Success,” the 4-year college plan provides a more comprehensive list of action steps to accomplish during your freshman year, sophomore year, junior year and senior year. The 4-year college plan will serve as your checklist and as a reflection of your accomplishments.

Career Goals: from Freshman to Senior Year

  • Seek career counseling.
  • Explore your interests, skills, and values related to various career fields.
  • Establish relationships with your academic advisor and faculty.
  • Consider joining student organizations.
  • Conduct informational interviews with professionals who work in the field in which your interests lie.
  • Research a minor or electives that complement your career goals.
  • Join professional associations and seek leadership positions.
  • Learn more about co-op and consider it as an opportunity to gain experience.
  • Attend career fairs relevant to your interests.
  • Network with employers at career fairs, workshops and campus events.
  • Attend workshops to enhance your job search skills.
  • Have your resume reviewed by a Student Success staff member.
  • Participate in on-campus interviewing for internships and co-ops.
  • Utilize resources to find contacts who can teach you about career paths and jobs for your major.
  • Strengthen professional relationships with faculty and staff.
  • Secure career-related employment.
  • Assess future of your chosen career field by talking to your professors and employers.
  • Investigate specialized areas of your chosen field.
  • Utilize resources to find access to hiring authorities.
  • Attend workshops to enhance your job search skills.
  • Ensure your resume is updated by having it reviewed by Student Success Center staff.
    • Begin to conduct informational interviews with employers.
    • Obtain career-related experience.

    • Research graduate or professional schools and take entrance exams.
    • Participate in mock interviews conducted by the Center for Student Success.

  • Attend workshops to enhance your job search skills.
  • Update your resume, and have it reviewed by CSS staff.
  • Identify skills you can offer employers that align with their needs.
  • Attend career fairs relevant to your interests.
  • Maintain relationships with academic advisor, faculty and mentor(s).
  • Select faculty and administrators to act as references.
  • Research job search strategies and potential employers.
  • Send resume and cover letters to employers and follow-up with telephone calls.
  • Take graduate or professional school entrance exams.
  • Evaluate offers and write letters to accept or decline a position.
