Application Portal Now Open: 2026 Advancing Student Potential for Inclusion with Research Experiences (ASPIRE) Program
The Advancing Student Potential for Inclusion with Research Experiences (ASPIRE) Program in the Cardiovascular Research Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin has up to 13 paid summer research fellowships available during the summer of 2026 (May 27th to July 31st) for undergraduates.
This program is funded by the National Institutes of Health’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. We are seeking undergraduate students who are interested in STEMM (including science, technology, biomedical engineering, and medicine) or biomedical careers for 10 weeks of hands-on experience in cardiovascular research within our laboratories, professional skill building, and seminars focused on STEMM and healthcare career preparation, how to apply to medical school and other allied health programs, and how to navigate graduate and medical school.

Directed by Dr. Joy Lincoln, Professor of Pediatrics, and Dr. Malika Siker, Associate Dean and Professor of Radiation Oncology at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
ASPIRE program benefits
Program Benefits:
• Participants are paired with a faculty researcher and their team to contribute to a preexisting project (prior research experience is not required)
• Seminars on professional skill building, “career chats” on specific graduate school, medical school, and other allied health careers, and overcoming challenges and barriers
• Learn how to apply for graduate and medical school and enjoy networking opportunities through social events throughout the summer
• The program culminates with each participant presenting an oral presentation about their research project during a collaborative MCW-wide Research Symposium
Participant Benefits:
• $6,000 compensation (paid in increments over the summer)
• Fully furnished housing accommodations to any participant from outside of the metro Milwaukee area at no cost
• Free one-time round-trip airfare to/from Milwaukee airport or ground transportation (if located more than 4 hours from Milwaukee)
• $1400 stipend to attend an optional scientific conference during the following year
Selected participants will gain valuable cardiovascular research experience, refine critical thinking skills, build upon academic and professional networks, and learn about careers in science and medicine.
Eligibility Requirements:
•Must be citizens or U.S. permanent residents (per NIH policy)
•Must be at least 18 years old by start of program
• Be currently enrolled and have completed at least one undergraduate year at an accredited college or university (rising sophomore, junior, or senior; must not have graduated)
• Intend to pursue cardiovascular health-related or STEMM-related graduate or professional-level studies.
